Displaying Individual Samples

In addition to the averaged results, results corresponding to each individual sample in Rectified and Pulsed sampling modes can also be viewed, displaying, for instance, the time dependence of the generated power similarly to an oscilloscope. This is, in fact, very important for choosing the appropriate sampling mode for your application.

To display individual samples, check the Send Samples checkbox in Homer Sampling Setup window or press the sbSamples button. Two modes are available: Continuous and Single-Shot. In Continuous mode, measurements are repeated indefinitely. In Single-Shot mode, a measurement and sending of all samples is made only once, then the Homer is stopped to a standstill. The Single-Shot mode is useful if the sample count is large (then the whole process takes long), or if you wish to study (and optionally save) results made at a particular instant.

  • To set Continuous mode, uncheck the Single-Shot checkbox in the Homer Sampling Setup window, or set the button to the Off (inactive) state.

  • To set Single-Shot mode, check the Single-Shot checkbox, or set the button to the On (active) state.

  • To disable the display of individual samples, uncheck the Send Samples checkbox, or set the sbSamples button into the Off (inactive) state.

Notes:

  • In Send Samples mode of data transmission, the Results windows will still display the averaged results.

  • Data logging is not allowed in Send Samples mode of data transmission.

  • Some quantities, e.g., reflection coefficient, are meaningless in zero-power signal portions. These extremely noisy samples are rejected by proper choice of Accept Level (Lacc) when computing the averaged results. To avoid their display in Send Samples mode of data transmission, a substitute (the last valid) value of the reflection coefficient is shown in place of these invalid samples.

  • Autotuning is based on the averaged results rather than individual samples.

  • Displaying individual samples first requires transferring them from the Homer to the PC. This process may take considerable time if the sample count is high and the baudrate is slow.

Triggering

In your initial experiments, it is advisable to enable Free Run () to avoid possible problems with triggering, and to set preliminary sampling parameters. Once you see a reasonable, although jittery, trace, you can deactivate Free Run (), and thus stabilize the trace.

Note: Due to the triggering evaluation time, a few of the first samples may be lost; therefore, the first pulse of the sampled pulse train may appear thinner.

Shifting displayed traces horizontally

To shift the displayed traces horizontally, define the number of samples you wish to see before the triggering event. You can do it in two ways:

  • Edit the Pre‑Trig edit box in the Homer Sampling Setup window.

  • Click the  Pre  Signal toolbar button (Fig. 15) and enter the desired value.
